Quick Things You Can Do to Build Buzz

It’s great to have a strategy and a plan. But sometimes, you’re strapped for time and budget, and you just need to build some quick buzz for your product, service or company. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.

Building buzz often takes a commitment of time and energy, but there are a few things that you can do when you need a quick boost. Here are some ideas for you. Keep in mind that these ideas aren’t necessarily meant to be strategic. They’re meant to be tactical.

Say Thanks to Your Best Customers

When was the last time you sent your best customers a thank you note? Probably around the holiday season. It’s always good to say thanks, especially when it’s least expected. Doing this can not only strengthen your relationship, but it can also trigger some happy shares on social media. By the way, don’t do this by email. Be classy and do it with a card.

Do Something Spontaneous

Grab your team, throw on a favorite tune, and just start dancing. Oh, and video tape  your team dancing. It doesn’t have to be fancy or well-edited. Just have fun. Then put it up online (as long as your employees agree to it). At the least, it shows that your company is human. At the best, your video goes viral. It’s a win no matter what.

Write and Send a Press Release

Normally, we don’t recommend sending a press release just for the sake of sending a press release. But when was the last time you announced something? Sometimes, it’s a good idea to send a press release just to stay on people’s radar. Maybe you don’t have any significant news to announce, but let’s be real: Your business is (hopefully) not at a standstill. There has to be something newsworthy going on like recent new hires, new clients, maybe some product updates, etc. It doesn’t have to be fancy, and your expectations or aspirations for this release should be reasonable. But it’s important to cultivate and maintain what we call a baseline level of awareness.

There are many, many things you can do to quickly create buzz. We’d love to hear your tricks and tips for keeping the heartbeat of your company going–at least publicly.


PR Intern Needed!

Evolve Communications, a Baltimore-based PR and Marketing firm is seeking a dynamic public relations intern. We are seeking someone who is ready to learn, can jump into a fast-paced office, and can wear many hats, helping assist the agency across multiple accounts. This is an entry-level position.

Responsibilities include:

  • Help manage day-to-day tactical execution of public relations and social media campaigns, including conducting phone and email outreach out to media
  • Write and distribute press materials
  • Develop media lists
  • Research and develop content for clients’ social media presences
  • Support communications/marketing projects and strategic planning as needed
  • Participate in team brainstorms and provide recommendations on the best way to execute communication
  • Provide general administrative support on various activities and projects

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Must be actively enrolled at a university and seeking a degree in communications, public relations, marketing or related field OR recently graduated (within one year)
  • Extreme attention to detail
  • Proficiency with social media and web management tools (Facebook, Twitter, Hootsuite, etc.)
  • Proficiency with MS Office tools
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Eager and willing to learn

Salary: $10/hour & college credit; will work 10-15 hours/week (or more, based on need and time frame)

How to Make a Press Kit

A press kit is an essential tool that every company needs in order to earn media coverage and provide important information to journalists looking to write about your company. When it comes down to it, your press kit should provide not only the basic information a reporter might need when writing about your company, but by putting it online, it will also serve to help your company be both find-able  in search engines and accessible.

Here are the basic items you need for a press kit:

  1. Company Fact Sheet

The company fact sheet is a one-pager that provides basics facts about your company. It can be used as a reference guide for editors and provide the essential details. The fact sheet normally includes:

  • Brief description of company (your elevator pitch)
  • Description of key products and services
  • Quick facts about the company, for example: Revenues or funding raised to date, number of employees, number of clients
  • Special achievements or awards
  • Listing of key personnel with contact information
  • Listing of company headquarters address and contact information (website, social media platforms, etc.)

Think of the fact sheet like a resume for your business.

  1. Company Backgrounder

The backgrounder is the place where you can provide more in-depth information about your business. Generally more prosaic than the fact sheet, your company backgrounder should tell your story, including when and how you were founded, what was the inspiration behind the business, what the real or potential impact of the business on the industry, etc.  

  1. Biographies

Biographies provide the media with additional information about key personnel. All principal players should have biographies. A comprehensive bio includes:

  • Name, title, list of responsibilities
  • Previous jobs or businesses
  • Education and awards
  • Professional affiliations
  • Community involvement
  • Personal information (optional)
  1. Story Idea Sheet

This is possibly the most valuable tool in your press kit, and it’s the most overlooked! The story idea sheet provides brief 1-2 sentence stories that a journalist can use. Journalists often like these because it gives them something to start with. And the document will still be useful even if it’s not used right away. Journalists will often hold onto these and return to them later when it fits more in line with a something they’re working on.

Finally a few basic tips:

  • Put everything online and make it fully accessible as both a regular web page and a downloadable PDF.
  • In your PDF, make sure you put all your documents on letterhead.
  • In your online press kit, be sure to include a page where where journalists can download your logo and other photos (like C-suite headshots)
  • Use a custom, easy-to-remember URL or shortened link.
  • Put contact information on every single page, as well as a link to the full press kit.

It seems like a no-brainer to have a press kit, but you’d be surprised how many startups and businesses don’t spend the time to put these together.
